Race leader Levi Leipheimer (USA) |
The best cyclists in the world continued to ride the roads of Colorado as the USA Pro Cycling Challenge entered its fifth day of competition. Following the start in the riverside town of Avon, the cyclists raced 82.8 miles and climbed 5,034 feet. The sprinters lit up the finish in Steamboat Springs with Ivan Basso's Liquigas teammate Elia Viviani seizing the stage win.
In the overall race, Levi Leipheimer started and finished the day in the leader's yellow checked jersey. Rivals Christian Vande Velde and Tejay Van Garderen were unable to gain any time on the RadioShack rider. While it will be difficult for the Garmin-Cervelo and HTC-Highroad men to best Leipheimer in the final two stages, the time gap is only 11 seconds to Vande Velde and 17 to Van Garderen, so an upset is certainly possible. Colorado-based Garmin leads the team competition. The final two days will bring the peloton into Breckenridge and then Denver.
